POROS PERLAWANAN – Lembaga HAM, Grant Liberty dalam laporannya mengungkap biaya besar yang digelontorkan Pemerintah Saudi untuk menyelenggarakan turnamen olahraga. Grant Liberty menilai, ini adalah upaya Riyadh untuk merehabilitasi citra buruk Saudi di bidang HAM.
Dikutip Fars dari Guardian, laporan Grant Liberty mendeskripsikan upaya Saudi ini dengan “pencucian uang melalui olahraga”. Dengan kata lain, Saudi menjadi tuan rumah atau menanamkan modal dalam turnamen-turnamen olahraga besar demi menciptakan kesan sebagai “negara berpemikiran progresif dan ramah bagi turis”.
Oleh sebab itu, Muhammad bin Salman telah menjalin kesepakatan senilai 145 juta dolar dengan Federasi Sepakbola Spanyol selama 3 tahun. Saudi juga menganggarkan 15 juta dolar untuk menyelenggarakan turnamen golf internasional, 33 juta dolar untuk menjadi tuan rumah kejuaraan biliar, dan 100 juta dolar untuk melangsungkan pertandingan tinju “Clash on the Dunes”, yang mempertemukan Andy Ruiz Jr dan Anthony Joshua pada tahun 2019 silam.
Saudi pada tahun 2014 meneken perjanjian senilai 500 juta dolar selama 10 tahun dengan World Wrestling Entertainment, yang merupakan sebuah media massa dan korporasi hiburan.
